Kitchen Demolition Phase 1

This is the first phase of the demolition, where all the walls and structures were exposed.

It was the fun part where we found "interesting" structural details and choices made in past remodels.

The first picture here is the small wall next to the fridge. Note the I beam that extends part way across and the notched joists sitting on it.

New Boiler

Here is the new boiler(s) in place. The heating guys Gerry Gill and Steve Pajek were absolute artisans putting this monster system in place. Getting this house heated was the first step before we could think of moving in. Note that you can still see the old coal fired boiler in the background. That is still around, though I should probably spray some oil or clear coat on it to keep the rust levels down.

For more pictures of this boiler set up and for some technical discussion on it, see Gerry's site

In the middle of this picture is the Mouat gauge (a type of pressure gauge or manometer) that was taken off the old coal boiler and put onto this one. Even the installers were pretty surprised at how little pressure was needed to run this system.

The 'burbs boiler

These are pictures of the boiler room. On the left is the old coal fired boiler. It used to have asbestos around it, but all that was removed... thus, the rust peaking through. On the right (picture below) is the gas fired furnace which should have worked. Unfortunately, the asbestos guys also decided to break apart the casing and remove the asbestos from inside the boiler! Morons! The gas valves shown below also were shot, but could have been replaced if the rest of the boiler was in good shape. Now I had to replace the whole unit.

The House... the dream

Here's how it all started. This is the outside of the house some time after we moved in... the Spring of 2007. The house was not lived in or heated for several years before. A good deal of the interior was also vandalized. This was good news in the fact that I could actually afford the place, but bad because of the amount of work that needs to be put into it.
